Online core, in your own time
Self-paced units on the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 and who carries which duty, the school safety statement, risk assessment, supervision and student considerations, and incident reporting. No unit runs longer than 45 minutes, each is scenario-led, and each ends in an assessment you must pass before moving on.

A module for each machine in your room
Machine modules are taken individually, so a teacher only ever sees the equipment they actually have. When a new machine arrives — a laser cutter, a CNC router — you take that one module rather than repeating the programme.

One hands-on day
In a host school room of the same type as your own, in a group small enough that everyone works on every machine. Competence is signed off machine by machine, in person, by an assessor. The day opens once the online work is passed — it is not the place to learn the theory.

A record the school can produce
You submit a risk assessment of your own room, marked against a published rubric. What comes back is more than a pass: a dated, assessor-signed record of who was trained, on what equipment, and when it falls due for renewal — the document a principal needs on file.
Who it trains — and who arranges it
Teachers
The people who run these rooms: who set the guard, supervise the class and make the judgement call in the moment. The programme is built around the room you teach in and the machines you actually have — not a generic syllabus.
Schools and ETBs
The employer — the Board of Management in a voluntary secondary school, the Education and Training Board in a community college. Schools and ETBs enrol their teachers and can see at a glance who is trained, on what equipment, and when it expires.
This is an employer obligation, not optional CPD
The duty to provide safety training rests with the employer — the Board of Management in a voluntary secondary school, the Education and Training Board in a community college — under sections 8 and 10 of the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005. Section 10 requires that training to be given at the employer's expense and on the employer's time. Section 13 makes attending it a statutory duty for the teacher.
A record only counts if it is complete and current. Sections 8 and 10 are not discharged by an in-service day three years ago that nobody can evidence. What gets asked for is specific: who was trained, on which machines, to what standard, by whom, and when it was last renewed. Where a school cannot answer that in writing, the gap belongs to the employer.
If something does go wrong
An accident in a technology room gets investigated. The HSA may attend, a claim may follow, and every question asked afterwards is about what was in place beforehand. No programme can make an accident impossible. What this one does is make sure the answers already exist, in writing, before anyone asks for them.
You can show you were trained on that machine
Competence is signed off machine by machine by a named assessor, on a dated record. Not "attended a course" — assessed as competent on the panel saw, on a given date, by someone who can be identified and asked.
You can show the room was assessed
The risk assessment you submit is of your own room, marked against a published rubric that tests whether it is signed, dated, carries a review date and is fit to go on a file. It lands on the school's file as well as yours.
You can show it was still current
Certification carries an expiry date, an annual refresher and reminders before it lapses. A record that quietly went out of date is worth very little afterwards — the system exists so that yours does not.
The record outlasts the platform
Records are exported and independently archived for ten years, together with the version of the content actually completed. If it is needed in five years, it is still there and still verifiable.
What the school holds the day a teacher finishes
Not a certificate in a drawer — a file that answers the questions in the order they get asked.

- The teacher's own room risk assessment, marked against the rubric
- A transcript of every unit, every score and every date
- The exact version of the content completed, for checking later
- All of it archived independently for ten years
